We at CAMSC love connecting with our network and share updates on inspiring stories and motivational messages. ‘On the Couch with CAMSC’ will be one such effort to highlight our certified supplier/corporates.

We are excited to have Caroline Cole Power, CEO, Canadian HR Academy, with us to share her journey towards becoming Canada's Most Powerful Women Top 100 Winner.

2020 was a challenging year. How did your organisation turn that around to your advantage and achieve success during the pandemic?

2020 was indeed challenging year, but we always had hope and that made all the difference. When COVID hit towards the beginning of last year, we wanted to pivot in a way where our organisation could serve our customers in a wholesome manner.

We realised if we advertised any of our offerings, because it was virtual, anyone from anywhere could go.

And so, this thought moved us from being regional to national and then we pushed even beyond that and now we are global. That is one big change we brought in during this pandemic.

We happened to notice and interpret the fact that, the pandemic was a negative thing and yes, it was challenging initially but the upside of it was that it opened our market from a national level to a global stage.

Could you tell us about the journey towards receiving the Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award?”

It all started in 2019! I was nominated for another award by my banker, a top financial institution in Canada, and it was a national award for entrepreneurship. I felt very appreciated for the work my organisation did.

However, unfortunately I was unable to do the submission at that time, though I consider being nominated itself as big win or rather a pat on the back for what we did at academy!

And this year, in 2020 I was nominated for this award (Top 100 Most Powerful Woman in Canada) and as they say, ‘If you let something good go, it comes back to you’ and this time I decided to participate.

From the perspective of my own lived experiences, the path that led to this award has been a journey and not efforts of a few months. It has been a life journey commencing all the way back from my kindergarten. Doing the work, putting in the hours, governing oneself appropriately both professionally and personally and getting the education. Most importantly making the right professional moves, working for the right employers, and getting the right experience. My success is a mixture of good choices and right decisions.

As a corporate training company what I sell through all my contacts and all my facilitators, is the formal education plus the experience combined. We sell practitioner-based tools to companies which they can use today, not theoretical tools, which they must run an experiment on to test its results.

So, for me, the journey has been a long one – from formal education, working for multiple employers and launching my practise. I am recognized now but its not a commentary on just where I am now, but my journey all along.

As people say, “An overnight success is 20 years in the making.”

Special message to our network

This is a personal message to everyone out there doing an amazing job day in and day out; Success is what you strive for, then putting in your time and energy is the only way to take. I proudly say that no one can outwork me! Because I learnt that talent is very important, but it is only the beginning and the rest of success comes with knowing how to work hard and work smart.

I always say this to myself that we must skate where the puck is going. And by that, I mean that whatever we deliver should be what the market is needing and that needs to coincide with our expertise. Particularly during these times, any business should look for how they best use their talent pool to leverage the most of any opportunity and pivot to achieve growth. The question should never be if we will be do this, it should always be how we will do this.

With this I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2021!
